Groton, Connecticut
With Cole Quist

The Southern New England landscape is a patchwork of dense inhabitation and swathes of unmanaged forest. These gangly woods are often first growth, reclaiming abandoned pastures. The globalized lifestyles in this region preclude us from seeing the timber in nearby forests as the sustaining resource it could be. A factory producing timber building components in Connecticut will match this untapped resource with our dire need for new housing construction.

A network of designers, developers, and regulators can customize CLT into low, mid, and high density configurations with any type of cladding to enhance local character. To explore the versatility of this material, three housing prototypes were developed for this project.
